Consoles that see tremendous market success tend to have surprisingly long lives, simply owing to their large install base. The Wii is one of these systems: It famously kept on seeing new releases all the way through Just Dance 2020. But there are some developers out there who just really like a particular platform, eagerly supporting their favorite retro consoles through homebrew projects. At retro gaming conventions, you'll see lots of these kinds of games for the Atari 2600, NES, Genesis/Mega Drive, even cult-favorite consoles like the Neo Geo. But, as much as we're loathe to admit it, the Wii is considered "retro" now--and Brazilian developer Nai Adventure is bringing their throwback shoot-'em-up Metal Canary to the platform on actual discs. Metal Canary is a classic, arcade-style scrolling shooter featuring pixel-art visuals. The game was originally developed as a homebrew title for Dreamcast with a PC port, but according to the developer in the description of the YouTube reveal, "the Wii version was ported in just six hours." What makes Metal Canary even more unusual is that it's getting a physical release on both the Wii and the Dreamcast. As of right now, the game is still under development but is nearly complete, with "only a few tweaks left and the implementation of a video player, which should be added soon." The completed game will formally debut at Retrocon 2026 in Oaks, Pennsylvania this September. The physical discs will be manufactured by Brazilian publisher Old Game for worldwide sale. If your Wii (or Dreamcast) collector's shelf has an empty hole that needs filling, you'll have a brand-new game to fill it with--and you'll be supporting an indie developer in the process.
